ODEROUS HOUSE ANT
|
|

Appearance
. The workers are about 1/16-1/8" (2.4-3.25mam)long There
body is brown to black. The antennae have 12 segments.
|
|
Inspection
. They forage day and night The nests can occur in a great
variety of situations. Inside, these ants usually construct their
nests in wall voids especially around hot water pipes and heaters,
in crevices in sinks, cupboards, etc.
|
|
Reproduction
. Females in the nest lays one egg daily. It takes an average
of 24 days for the young to reach adulthood. The nest colonies
range from 100 to 10,000 ants, but can be driven away by invading
Argentine ants.
Special characteristics
. This native species, found throughout the United States,
produces a foul odor when crushed. It smells like a "rotten
coconut"
|
Diet
They can feed on anything..
. Iinsects, honeydew, seeds, plant secretions, but do prefer
sweets. They are extremely fond of honeydew and attend such honeydew-excreting
insects as plntlice(aphids),scale insects, mealybugs, etc. |
|
. Outside, they are found in exposed soil, usually shallow,
often located beneath a board, brick , stone walk, etc.
|
|
. They are most likely to enter buildings when their honeydew
supply or sweet supply of food is reduced such as during rainy weather
or with leaf fall in the autumn. |
|
RED FIRE ANTS AND FIRE ANT
|

Appearance
. Worker fire ants are dark, small, highly variable in size,
aggressive, and sting relentlessly.
. Workers have the same body proportions from the tiniest
to the largest. Head width never exceeds the abdomen width, even
in the largest workers.
|
|
. Both Native and Imported red fire ants can sting. The red
imported fire ant is particularly aggressive.
. The Imported Fire ants
are very aggressive, their sting can cause reactions anywhere
from an irritation and nausea to even more severe reactions in
humans.
|
|
Inspection
. The mound has no opening in the center like most ant mounds.
Red imported fire ants leave and enter the mound housing the colony
through underground tunnels
. Colonies also can occur in or under buildings. When their
mounds are disturbed, their workers will come out of the ground
and sting the intruder very aggressively.
. They are known to attack people, plants, and animals,
as well as cause damage to homes, buildings, and air-conditioning
units,telephone wires.
|
Imported
fire ants have the the following characteristics
. There are two kinds of red imported fire ants; the single
queen and multiple queen forms.
. Workers in single queen colonies are territorial, foraging
within their territory.
. Workers from multiple queen colonies are not territorial,
they freely move from one mound to another, which has resulted in
a dramatic increase in the number of mounds per acre.
. Areas infested with single queen colonies contain 40 to
150 mounds per acre (rarely more than 7 million ants per acre).
. In areas with multiple queen colonies, there may be 200 or
more mounds and 40 million red fire ants per acre.
|
|

Reproduction
. Total time from egg to adult averages 30 days, workers live
up to 180 days, and queens live two to six years.
|
|
Inspection
. Mounds of loose soil, resembling gopher diggings, are found
above ground.
. Red fire ant mounds are generally numerous and easily sighted.
. The red imported fire ant can have huge colonies with
300-500,000 workers foraging at distances of 100 yards. Their usual
activity is from the spring time through the fall months. During
the spring and summer months, the active mounds will send out winged
swarmer ants ;whose sole job is start new colonies.
. Sometimes the red imported fire ant will nest inside during
the winter months under the bathtubs (when on a slab), or next to
hot water heater. The southern fire ant will usually nest in loose
soil, but at times they can be found in woodwork or masonry.
. Their nest may be seen as large crevices in the ground
that spread out from 2-4 feet. Their nest can be found under houses,
under boards or stones, or in cracks in the concrete. |
Diet
. The imported fire ant will not only forage for food, such
as small insects dead animals, and sweet materials such as plant
secretions but will kill insects and small animals to feed
. The southern fire ant go for a variety of foods including
protein, greases and sweet foods. |
|
. The red imported fire ant builds mounds in almost any type
of soil, but prefers open, sunny areas such as pastures, parks,
lawns, meadows and cultivated fields.
. Mounds can reach 18 inches in height, depending on the
type of soil. Many times mounds are located in rotting logs and
around stumps and trees. |
|
. Colonies frequently migrate from one site to another. The
queen needs only a few workers to start a new colony. ; They can
develop a new mound several hundred feet away from their previous
location almost overnight.
. Flooding causes colonies to leave their mounds and float
until they can reach land to establish a new mound. Colonies also
can migrate to indoor locations |
GHOST ANTS OF BLACK HEADED ANTS
|

|
|
Appearance
. Ghost ants look like tiny, white apparitions who suddenly
appear and seem to disappear just as quickly.
. Workers are are 1/16
inch/1.5 mm in length. The legs, pedicel, gaster, and antennae
are pale, almost translucent, in color and the head and thorax
are darker. For this reason, the ghost ant is also known in some
areas as the black-headed ant.
|
|
Reproduction
. Colonies of ghost ants tend to be moderate to large in
size and multiple queens are present.New colonies are started by
"budding" where one or more reproductive females, several workers,
and possibly some brood(larvae and pupae) migrate to a new nesting
site. Their biology in similar to the Pharoah ant. |
|
PHAROAH ANTS
|
|
|
|

|
|
Reproduction
. Grows from egg to adult in about 45 days;females live as
long as 39 weeks and can lay about 400 eggs; workers only live up
to 10 weeks. |
Appearance
. Very small; Light
yellow to red, with black markings on abdomen. Pharaoh ants are
small, yellow ants about 1/16-inch long
|
|
. Pharaoh ants being extremely small can be found in a diversity
of places appearing suddenly.
|
|
. They have a wide range of foraging and their nest are usually
well hidden. They are very persistent, with large colonies. |
|
CARPENTER
ANT
|
|

carpenter ant
|
|
Diet
. Carpenter ants eat a variety of plant and animal foods,
as well as sweets, and also feed on other insects.
Habits
. Carpenter
Ants are nocturnal.
|
|

carpenter ant workers
|
|
Habitate
.
They usually nest outside in moist wood or partially decayed wood.
They prefer to hollow out their nests in softened wood.
.
Their nests are called "galleries." These galleries are clean
and have a sandpaper appearance. In comparison, termite galleries
are rough looking. Wood that has been damaged by carpenter ants
contain no mud-like material, as is the case with termites.

BAD DAMAGE
|
|
Inspection
. Because Carpenter Ants forage primarily at night, inspections
should be made in the evening or early morning to locate foraging
trails and nest sites.
. The workers have been known to travel as far as 100 yards
from the colony to search for food and water.
. A thorough inspection is important to find all the sites.
Don't conclude your inspection when one colony is found; several
colonies may be present in and around the structure.
. Inspect wooden structures associated with high moisture,
where there may be water damage that produces softened wood.
|
|
Appearance
. Carpenter
ants are large, from 1/4 o 3/8 inches long and are dark brown
to black, but some may have red or yellow coloration.
.
The black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus, in the east
and C. modoc in the west are the most thoroughly studied species
in the United States.
. Other species of Camponotus are distributed throughout
the country. The queens are slightly bigger. The workers of an
established colony very in size. The usual carpenter ant is large
and black, but the Florida carpenter ant, is smaller and ranges
in colors from yellow, red, brown to black.
BAD DAMAGE
|
|
INDOORS
. Moisture problems
. Wall voids
. Attics (especially under roofing and insulation)
. Flooring or sub flooring
. Ceilings
. Windows
. Skylights
. Hollow doors
. Dishwashers
. Trash compactors
. Plumbing, pipe chases(kitchen/bath)
OUTDOORS
. Trees
. Stumps/ dead trees
. Landscape timbers
. Woodpiles and fences
. Leaf litter
. Debris piles
. Mulch beds
. Door kick plates
. Roof lines and gutters
. Soffits and vents
. Windows and door frames
. Utility entrances( electric, cable, TV, telephone, gas
lines)
. Sheds and doghouses
. Trash containers
|
|

CARPENTER ANTS DAMAGE
. Carpenter Ants prefer frames and sills of windows and
doors, as well as tub enclosure walls, and kitchen and bath plumbing
walls.
. After sunset is a good time of day to see carpenter ants
when their activity increases, particularly in the spring and
summer.
. You may want to use a flashlight to observe any obvious
trails and patterns. To locate their nests' sites, focus on these
areas
|
|
. Outdoor nest are found
in places like tree stumps, hollow logs, fence posts or dead portions
of standing trees.
However, theses persistent creatures can build nests in cracks and
crevices of sound wood.
They may establish nests in a
number of different locations.
It is important to understand than you can have both inside and
outside nests.
Carpenter Ants construct two different kinds of nests: parent colonies
which, when mature, contain an egg-laying queen, a brood, 2,000
or more worker ants, and satellite colonies, which may have large
numbers of worker ants, but no queen, eggs or larvae.
For example, the ones found in your home may have originated from
parent nests outdoors, perhaps in a tree stump, timber or woodpile,
or from one or more satellite nests hidden behind a wall in the
kitchen or bathroom, or perhaps from wood dampened by a roof leak
in the attic. Although large carpenter ant colonies can cause structural
damage, the damage is not normally as serious as termite damage.
|
|
Other Ants
|

Ants Citronella
|

Ant Thief |

Argentine Ant |

Little Black Ants |

Pavement Ant |
|
Characteristics
. The insect can travel quickly, often darting out of sight
when someone enters a room, and can fit into small cracks and
under doors despite its fairly large size. It is considered one
of the fastest running insects.
. It has a pair of large eyes
each having over 2000 individual lenses thus making it a very
active night animal that shuns light.
Reproduction
. They have been known
to fly during mating season
. Females produce
egg cases and carry them protruding from the tip of the abdomen
for about two days. Egg cases are then generally placed on a surface
in a hidden location.
. Egg cases are about 0.9 centimetres (0.35 in) long, brown,
and purse shaped. Immature cockroaches emerge from egg cases in
6 to 8 weeks and require 6 to 12 months to mature. Adult cockroaches
can live up to one year, during which females produce an average
of 150 young.
|
|
Appearance
. American cockroach adults grow to an average length of
around 4 centimetres (1.6 in) and about 7 millimetres (0.28 in)
tall.
. They are reddish brown and have a yellowish margin on
the body region behind the head. Immature cockroaches resemble
adults except that they are wingless.

There are about 4,000 species of cockroach, of which 30 species
are associated with human habitations and about four species are
well known as pests.
|
|

American Roach
Habitate
. In residential areas, these cockroaches live in
basements and sewers, and may move outdoors into yards during
warm weather. These cockroaches are common in basements, crawl
spaces, cracks and crevices of porches, foundations, and walkways
adjacent to buildings.
. American cockroaches generally live in moist areas, but
can survive in dry areas if they have access to water. They prefer
warm temperatures around 29 °C (84 °F) and do not tolerate cold
temperatures.
Diet
. The American cockroach is a scavenger that feeds on decaying
organic matter and a variety of other foods. It is particularly
fond of fermenting foods
|
|

Appearance
. The common bed bug is visible to the naked eye. Adult
bed bugs are brown to reddish-brown, oval-shaped, flattened,
and about 1/4 to 5/8 inch long.
. Their flat shape enables them to readily hide in cracks
and crevices. After a blood meal, the body elongates and becomes
swollen.
. Bed bugs have a beak like piercing-sucking mouthpart
system.
. The adults have small, stubby, nonfunctional wing pads.
Newly hatched nymphs are nearly colorless, becoming brownish
as they mature.
. Nymphs have the general appearance of adults.
. Eggs are white and about 1/32 inch long.
|
|
. Bed bugs cannot fly and prefer to hide close to their
hosts when not feeding.
. They can be found in apartments, hotels, homes, shelters,
and student dormitories.

. Bed bugs can also hide
on clothing or in luggage when you travel and can be brought
to places like your home or hotel.
. Eggs are not known to be placed on the host's body
but are found on surfaces near where the host sleeps.
|
|
Diet
. Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and animals to
survive. Unlike some parasites, such as fleas or lice, bed bugs
do not live on their hosts but only visit them to feed.
Bed bugs are most active at night.
Their bite is similar to being bitten by a mosquito it is painless
and may results in a small, red, itchy bump. However, many people
have no reaction at all.
How do I know I have bed bugs?
Although bed bugs can move quickly, if you can find them it
should be fairly easy to collect one for identification.
During the day, bed bugs tend to hide close to where they feed
for example, where people sleep. Bed bugs do not have nests,
but they do tend to gather and hide in routine places.
If bed bugs are present, there will be dark spotting and staining
on your sheets, mattress, pillow, carpets, and clothing. The
staining is from their excrement and blood from crushed insects
that have fed.
|
|
Growing problem
Reports of bed bug problems have been on the rise. The increase
in bed bugs is thought to be the result of changes in modern
pest control practices including the use of insect specific
baits and gels, which do not work for bed bug control. In addition,
more people are traveling abroad increasing the chance of bringing
the insect back in their luggage. Are bed bugs a health concern?
|
|
|
|
Medical facts
. Bed bugs have not been shown to spread disease to humans.
Although bed bugs are considered more of a nuisance than a health
concern, public health officials maintain a level of concern
due to the possibility of secondary infections.
. The main concern is the risk of infection from scratching
the area of the bite. The reaction from the bite usually goes
away within hours or days without treatment.
. Applying an antiseptic lotion or antibiotic cream
to the area may help symptoms and prevent infection

Mouse
|
|
What harm can rats and mice
cause?
. Rats and mice can pose a serious threat to property
and health.
They cause building damage by chewing on insulation, sidings, electric
wires and wallboard.
. They will eat a wide variety of stored food. These
rodents will often contaminate food that they don't eat, which
could lead to food poisoning, as well as leaving a mess in your
cupboards.
|
|

Rat Dropping
|
|
. All three types of rodents
can also transmit diseases, which are carried on their feet
and spread through their urine, droppings or bite. The ticks
and fleas carried by rodents can also spread diseases.

BLACK
WIDOW
|
|
|
|
|
Appearance

FEMALE BLACK WIDOW
. The female black widow spider is the most easily recognized,
her shiny black body giving great contrast to the red hourglass
marking on her round abdomen.
. Adult black widow spider males are harmless, about half
the female's size, and usually have yellow and red bands with
spots on their backs.
. The legs of the male are much longer in proportion to
his body than that of the female, with it's body half the size.
|
|
. Black Widow Spiders are considered venomous spiders in
North America.
. Black Widow spiders are not usually deadly, especially
to adults, because they inject only a small amount of venom.
. Despite its reputation, this spider often attempts to
escape rather than bite, unless it is guarding an egg mass or
if it is cornered and pressed.
. After mating, the female sometimes eats the male, earning
the name "widow."

. Take proper precautions, wear gloves and pay attention
to where you are working.
|
|
The female captures her victims with her silk, wrapping it around
the prey . After the covering of the silk, the prey is killed
by an injection of venom. The prey might be eaten immediately
or reserved for a later feeding.
Bites
. You may not always feel the black widow spider bite at first.
. The first sign of a bite is a small local swelling.
. There may be two small red spots in the center of the
swelling.
. After three hours or so, the site of the bite becomes
more painful.
.Common reactions include an overall ache of the body, in
particular the legs.
.Other symptoms include alternating salivation and dry-mouth,
paralysis of the diaphragm, profuse sweating and swollen eyelids.
. In severe cases, a headache, elevated blood pressure,
nausea and perspiration could occur.
|
|
Where do we find them
. Black widow spiders can be found around wood piles,
and are frequently encountered when homeowners carry firewood
into the house.
. Webs are usually built near the ground (occasionally
within dwellings) normally in trash, rubble piles, under or
around houses and outbuildings such as privies, sheds and garages.
They can be found under eaves, in storage bins, underneath unused
construction materials, inside wooden toy boxes, firewood boxes,
outdoor toilets and sheds, meter boxes, on the underside of
ledges, rocks, plants and debris, and other undisturbed places,
wherever a web can be strung.
. Cold weather and drought may drive these spiders into
buildings
.
|
|
Reproduction
. She stays close to her egg mass, defensively biting anything
that disturbs her or her egg sac. Egg sacs are oval, brown, papery
and about ½ inch long. They hold from 25 to 750 or more eggs,
which have an incubation period of 20 days.
. Newly hatched spiders are predominately white or yellowish-white,
gradually acquiring more black and varying amounts of red and
white with each molt.
. Growth requires two to three months, with older black
widow spider females dying in autumn after egg laying.
. The female black widow stores sperm, producing more egg
sacs without mating.
. Some black widow spider females live more than three
years. |
|
. The poison injected by the Black Widow Spiders
bite can cause abdominal pain similar to appendicitis as well
as pain to muscles or the soles of the feet.
. In most cases symptoms disappear in two or three days.
. Calcium gluconate is used intravenously to relieve and relax
muscle spasms produced by black widow venom.
. The victim of a black widow bite should go to the doctor
immediately for treatment
. Treatment in a medical facility may be necessary for
children less than 5 years old or for adults with severe symptoms.
. Clean the site of the bite well with soap and water.
Apply a cool compress over the bite location and keep the affected
limb elevated to about heart level. Aspirin or Tylenol may be
used to relieve minor symptoms. |
| |
|
|
|
|
|
Bats
|
|
|
|
. A bat is the only mammal
that can fly. Its scientific name is Chiroptera (Ki-ROP-ter-ah),
meaning hand-wing.
. Bats are mammals like you and me.
|
|
. Bats
are great for the ecosystem. Most eat tons and tons of harmful
insects. Bats are pest controllers, planters and pollinators.

. The bats in the Canada
are mostly insectivores. Using echolocation, they identify moths,
mosquitoes,wasps and various flying insects.
|
|
Habitats
. Some live in caves and some live in trees but many
prefer man made structures. like your home especially if it
is by water
. Bats have a fast growing number of friends.
Many countries have laws to protect these beneficial creatures.
. Often cave entrances are covered with grating through
which bats can go, but people cannot.
. Bat houses are becoming so popular throughout the
world, that highway departments are building bridges that attract
bats.
|
|
. Some bats live 32 years, although most live fewer
than 20 years.

We would never under any circumstance harm them in any way.
We just move them out and find them a proper dwelling even if
we have to build them one so they can continue to do the great
work and have a safe life for you and them
|
|
Health risk
. Relatively few bats are rabid. If you don't touch a bat,
you won't get rabies from it. However, your cats and dogs need
their rabies shots. Your own pets are more likely to carry rabies.
. You certainly do not want Bats in your homes or offices
just in your enviroment, but can you imagine the amount of insects
around without bats you wouldn't believe.
So, don't be afraid next time you see a bat. They are part of
nature and belong just where they are at as long as there not
in your home or office.
|
|
Habits
. Bats are the only major predators of night-flying
insects. Bats are nocturnal, flying in darkness searching for
food.
. During the day, they sleep hanging upside down. Bats
huddle closely together. Hundreds can hang out together in a
single, square-foot space!
|
|
.
We really respect what Bats do for the enviroment !!!!
Not only will we eliminate their access to your property/ repair
and clean up all damage/we will also relocate them nearby in
there own Bat House recommended by the Biodrome and the University
of Laval. This way your family is safe they are safe and they
will still be able to control an awfull lot of your unwanted
insects.
